Rigid couplings

Our rigid couplings are true torque monsters. Miki Pulley’s STK couplings are designed for simple applications without offsets, where maximum torque needs to be transmitted in a small space.

They are available in steel or stainless steel, slotted or split, with inner diameters from 6 to 80 mm. Depending on the bore diameter, torques of up to 5000 Nm are possible. The combination of torque and small installation space makes these couplings perfect for mechanical engineering.

What is a rigid coupling?

The STK shell coupling is a so-called rigid coupling. It is used to connect two shafts together to transmit torque.

The one-piece design (STK-GS) of this torsionally rigid shaft coupling not only provides unconditional stability at the highest speeds and a low mass moment of inertia, but also enables maximum torsional stiffness during dynamic load changes. In addition, the two-piece STK-GT is also available for easier assembly. This enables assembly even if the shaft ends can no longer be moved axially.

In contrast to the ASK slit coupling, this coupling does not offer misalignment compensation. It is important to note that rigid couplings do not provide compensation for misalignment or vibration. In applications where such problems may occur, flexible couplings that provide some axial, radial or angular freedom are more appropriate.

How do rigid couplings work?

Rigid couplings function by providing a direct mechanical connection between two shafts, without any flexibility or motion compensation. They provide a rigid and fixed connection to transfer torque from one shaft to the other under adverse conditions.

Due to their design, rigid couplings provide efficient and direct power transmission. They are capable of transmitting high torques and are therefore popular in applications with high performance requirements.

The STK rigid coupling prevents axial, radial and angular misalignment between shafts. A relatively simple design compared to some other coupling types. They usually consist of one element, which simplifies their manufacture and assembly.

Where are rigid couplings used?

Rigid couplings are used in various industrial applications where a direct and rigid connection between two shafts is required. They are often used in applications with demanding performance requirements, such as high-performance motors and gearboxes, mechanical engineering, heavy-duty applications, precision applications, and aerospace.

What sets Miki Pulley rigid couplings apart?

As with almost all Miki Pulley couplings, this shell coupling can be customized to meet any customer requirements.

It is important to note that rigid couplings also have their limitations. Since they do not offer flexibility, they cannot compensate for misalignment or vibration. Therefore, when using rigid couplings, the exact requirements of the application and any associated motion or vibration must be considered. In some cases, flexible couplings that allow some freedom of movement may be a better choice.
